Bye bye, Facebook, at least for a while this summer. After that, who knows? |
I deactivated my Facebook account Tuesday. I will make the explanation as short and to the point as possible. Here goes.
1) Because I've lost too many friends because I expressed my political point of view on there. People I used to care about have extricated themselves from my life. I mourn their departure, but at the same time have a sense that it's good riddance. I care about my country and my countrymen, so because my opinion differs from theirs, they've abandoned me. In a very small number of cases, it is I who abandoned them, but in each specific instance, it was their arrogance and insult that inspired me to sever our Facebook connection. I was stupid, uneducated, a racist, etc. If that's what they think of me, I don't need them in my life, anyway.
2) As the situation in our country continues to evolve, devolve is probably more like it, I find myself becoming intolerant of dissenting voices even absent of insult. The insults are still there, mind you, but no longer a prerequisite to my intolerance. At the same time I find continuing to express myself futile and counterproductive. I just do. More than anything, though, as much as people's intolerance toward me and my views as I described in the preceding paragraph has hurt me, those feelings serve to makes me uncomfortable with my own, similar feelings toward others. It just ain't worth it.
I decided to sit Facebook out for a while. I'll reassess later this summer. We'll see. For now, I'll concentrate on family, taking care of stuff at home, reading lots of books, and continuing my Italian Lessons.
Arriverderci Facebook.
