Walk and Chew Gum - 5/29/2022

 

We have to do something different.

Immediately after the Uvalde, TX school massacre, I posted that I don't know the answers. I don't. There are multiple problems in our country that contribute to these tragedies. I want to post about guns this morning, but before I do, because some of what I have to say about guns will immediately make some of you point out some or all of these other issues. Some problems which, in my opinion, contribute to this are:

A mental health epidemic.

Anti-depressant and ADHD medications are dispensed like candy to manage kids moods.

Broken homes and fatherless homes.

We don't spank or discipline our kids anymore, not like in days past.

Lack of religious morality.

The morality in our entire culture has been whittled away in favor or individualism and choices.

Law enforcement invariably seems to have known about the killer but they never seem to be able to intercept them before they kill (because we're innocent till proven guilty).

Violence on TV and in movies is glamorized and glorified, it's terrible, and it is a factor.

Video games train kids that more killing is better and desensitizes them to killing.

Social media, especially the anonymously posted stuff, dehumanizes everyone in the eyes of some people.

Lastly (this list may not be comprehensive, but this is last on this list), people who IN NO WAY should have access to guns have it. This is where I'm going.

Republicans are always protecting our right, guaranteed under the 2nd Amendment, to bear arms. An editorial I read by Peggy Noonan in yesterday's Wall Street Journal struck a nerve with me. I didn't think she was all right, and I won't dissect her piece here. I will post a link to it in a comment. What struck me was how (my own words here) Republicans need to learn to walk and chew gum at the same time. Yes, protect my right to bear arms, including my AR-15. The right to bear arms isn't for hunting. It isn't for home defense with small caliber stuff. It's to preclude or deter the next tyrannical government, foreign or domestic, from trampling U.S. citizens other rights like the British did to the colonists. That's what the right to bear arms is for. Self defense, target shooting, and hunting are great, and our 2A right protects those activities, too. But, let there be no doubt, they are NOT the reason it's in the Constitution.

So it's great that the NRA and the GOP protect that right. Democrats think they have a solution. Their solution is to limit or revoke our right to bear arms, a right that our Constitution clearly and specifically explains comes from the creator, not the government, and which the Constitution specifically prohibits our government from infringing. It's noteworthy that in colonial times, wealthy colonists had not just cannons, but some had their own warships, with cannons aplenty. Cannons were the most powerful weapons on Earth at the time. I'm not advocating we all have our own stashes of weapons of mass destruction. Democrats are wrong on this issue, but Republicans are, too.

We've let this debate become a left vs. right, prohibit vs. allow, guns vs. no guns, Republicans vs. Democrats issue. I've already said Democrats are wrong about 2A. I've already said that I do not have the answers. All that being true, kids like the Uvalde Texas mass-murderer, child murderer, evil scumbag shouldn't have guns. Democrats have kept Republicans on the defensive about the guns issue, and Republicans are cast as a one song, nightclub act, singing "guns, guns, guns, guns, guns" till closing time in response.

We can walk and chew gum at the same time. We can. Despite the worn out all or none battle lines (no pun intended) that have been drawn, Republicans need to lead the way to not just protecting our 2A rights, but to prevent people who shouldn't have guns from getting them. I don't know what the answer to that is. We, myself included, have been so myopically focused on protecting our own sacred right to bear arms, that we enable people who simply ought not have that right access to them.

What is the answer? I don't know. I really don't. Like many millions of Americans, I know my guns are innocent and that I won't use them like these evil, deranged, wackos are using them far to often. Any Republican who dares say we have a problem and tries to do ANYTHING is immediately attacked as a traitor and a RINO. Democrats don't accept the founders' rationale for 2A in the first place, and they've successfully painted the GOP into a corner where they're fighting to protect 2A rights but doing next to nothing to prevent the next one. Or the next one. Or the next one.

We can walk and chew gum. We can find an answer IF we look for it. All or none, guns or no guns is NOT an answer and never will be. What we can't do is what we always do, stay in our left and right trenches and behind our well fortified battle lines. Why can't we? Because this keeps happening. Period. Like I said, I don't know. I don't. But Democrats don't have the answer, and neither do Republicans. They both act like they do, and many of us are fully aligned with one or the other of the two, but these keep happening.

One last thought: don't bring up abortion or Chicago murders or other side issues. Don't shift the conversation. That happens again and again, every damned time. The questions are these: How can we keep guns out of the hands of homicidal maniacs. How do we protect schoolkids and innocents from the next one of these? These killers shouldn't have guns. I am not a killer. Figure it out. We can walk and chew gum at the same damned time.

I'm pissed off.

No Sacred Cows - 5/26/2022

Every one of these horrific mass shootings should be investigated much in the same manner as the NTSB conducts an aircraft accident investigation.

The investigation should be accomplished by professionals, and all the relevant parties to the episode should be party to it: police, community, school officials, government (local, state, federal), etc.

There can be NO sacred cows. All factors should be examined completely and under a very powerful microscope. Yes, guns, the location’s defensive or lack of defensive capabilities, mental health, medications, family, community, the justice system, the killer’s entertainment, social media, video gaming habits, on and on an on. All on the table and ALL contributory factors included with a primary and secondary causal factor identified, as well as recommendations to help avert the next tragedy. 

What we do instead is cherry pick issues based on politics. Would politics play a role in the investigation I’m advocating? Surely it would. But by ensuring ALL parties are represented, all factors examined, no sacred cows, hopefully something better can be achieved. We seem to be inclined to argue about one issue, you all know what it is. And that argument may have some validity as a causal factor. But by limiting it to one issue, there are a lot that are not being looked at. Why? Because they’re sacred cows, issues that it might or would be politically incorrect to dare to speak of. The sacred cow business has to end. We need to look at all the issues from 360°, ground level and 50,000’ views.

These tragedies hurt my heart. The unproductive arguing over a single issue after they happen helps nothing. That one issue can’t be a sacred cow, either. There either are sacred cows or there aren’t.

Destroying the Economy to Save the Planet - 5/23/2022-2

 

Not so fast, lefty.

These idiots are knowingly crashing the economy. They lie and give excuses, but we know they're against the fossil fuel industry, hate big (profitable business), and are totally out of touch with suburban and rural Joe Six-Pack' everywhere. This is a big squeeze to push us into electric cars. Well, I've been giving it some thought. I'm not philosophically or emotionally opposed to an electric vehicle, but it's got to work for me. Newsflash: it don't.

Range - No electric vehicle I can find has sufficient range to satisfy my driving needs. I drive to Louisville from south Florida and back 3, 4, 5 times per year. It's 972 miles, one way. That's 3 stops to charge, minimum, assuming I don't spend 2-3 hours stuck in traffic south of Atlanta, north of Chattanooga, or near Nashville.

Range, cont'd - My driving WILL include trips to the mountain west. Anyone who follows my page sees the pictures I post. For a variety of reasons, we're not embarking on epic western journeys at this very moment, but they WILL happen. There are gas stations everywhere, and in 10-15 minutes we can gas and go. How the hell do I traverse Montana, Wyoming, or Utah 200 or less miles at a time.

Towing - I like to do my fishing. YANKY 72, me and Dale's little jonboat, is light, but it's a tow. Towing has a lot of impact on range. I'm not sure I want to take an electric SUV into the Wildlife Management Area for a day of fishing.

4WD/AWD - A lot of the roads where I go fishing are unpaved. I like 4WD for pulling the boat out of a backwater. 4WD will drive UP cost and drive DOWN range.

Home Charging - I wouldn't be adverse to installing a 240 V charger in our garage to charge a vehicle here at Florida House. It would cost a few bucks, but it would speed up the process. But what would I do at Kentucky Condo? We have no garage there. There are no provisions for electricity there at all. For trips to Kentucky condo, it would mean enduring the inconvenience of NEVER charging at night and having to go someplace for hours every time it needs a charge.

Cost - I can afford and electric vehicle. But they are more than their gas or diesel counterparts. I don't know how much it costs to use a charger, or what the electric bill would be at home for charging vs. filling up the tank. Since an electric vehicle won't meet many of my transportation needs, it seems to me the only real option is to make the electric vehicle a third vehicle that Caroline and I can use for local driving here. It does seem as though most, not quite all but most of our local driving could be done in an electric car. But to justify the cost as an extra vehicle is a stretch.

So please, would somebody tell the idiots that while some, like myself, are open to an electric vehicle at some point, that there are too many insurmountable factors against getting one at this time? Punishing me at the gas pump and every single other place that I spend money because electric vehicles doesn't work for me isn't JUST stupid. These bastards are destroying the economy in a delusional attempt to save the planet. It's selfish and hostile.

Duped - 5/23/2022

I have many friends who were duped by the Trump-Russia collusion hoax. This includes some of you seeing this. I know you hate Trump. Some of you, the hoax is/was a significant reason why you hate(d) him. Now that you know it was a hoax perpetrated by the Clinton campaign, and that it was knowingly advanced by the FBI and press, not a one of you will admit that you were duped.

Were you duped? You know you were.

 

The consequences of this criminal conspiracy, to which by your silence now YOU are a party, was a Mueller investigation that undermined the Trump presidency for two-plus years and cost Republicans the House in 2018. This led to a bogus impeachment by a rabidly partisan House of Representatives.

Now, instead of prosperity and a booming economy, we have an inept shell of a man, an angry old grumpy grandpa. He's corrupt, too, selling his soul and family name via his son to foreign interests. We have a senile criminal at the helm and we are headlong rushing into a recession or worse. His remaining supporters, what ones he has left, play "Emperor's New Clothes", pretending nothing is his fault, ever. The rest may no longer be in support, but you are still complicit in you silence. The next evil this Administration will perpetrate is giving away a chunk of our sovereignty to the World Health Organization. I know you hate that inconvenient US Constitution, but you should read it sometime. Treaties are to be ratified by the US Senate. Let's see if they do or don't, because as bad as Biden is at his job, they're just about as bad. Sellouts, just like Joe.

 

Were you duped? You know you were. Are you ashamed or mad? You ought to be. The fact you're not makes you every bit the problem that Washington is, because it is your silence they see as an endorsement to selling us out further, and again and again.

 

Wake up. Speak up.

The GOP and Black America - 5/15/2022

I've had a blog post on this topic bouncing around inside my head for months. I've tried to understand why, despite the failure, over decades, roughly half a century, of Democratic leadership in largely Black cities across America, why Black Americans simply seem to refuse to come to the other side. It's as if the votes are automatically for Democrats, come hell or high water. Why?

In the last year or two I have listened with great interest to the voices of a good number of Black conservatives. I take in the message and then look to the GOP, and I do NOT see, with noteworthy exceptions, an effort to cultivate and grow the phenomena of the Black conservative in our country. Sure, Candace Owens is great. I love her. Really, I do. And I really dig David Webb, Larry Elder, and other voices who the mainstream of the GOP seems to embrace. But from social media, there are many more who are conservative, but they, to me, seem unwelcomed in the GOP. Why?

Well, first and foremost, the GOP is run and controlled by an establishment. The same establishment that fought a sometimes seen, sometimes unseen war against outsider Donald Trump, is just as closed minder to Black conservatives who may have ideas that are different from what the power loves and the power has. Just like they undermined Trump daily, they have no interest in new voices with new ideas. The establishment GOP already has its financial masters, and those masters want the control they bought and paid for. To let new voices, whether it's Trump or Black America, have a say in the direction of the country might undermine the desires of the money and the power. Can't have that! Expand the tent to let millions of Black conservatives inside? Nope. Conform and fit into the old tent, like Candace does, or get the hell out of here.

Then you've got your "purity test" Republicans. The my way or the highway crowd. The ideologues. Black Americans come from a different place, have a different culture, and have different experiences. Oftentimes, these differences manifest in different opinions, opinions NOT welcome by the purity test crowd. You think what!!!! Conservatives don't think that way. You're out. You failed our purity test.

Black satellite radio commentator Sonnie Johnson opened my eyes to my own lack of understanding of Black conservatism. Others have come along to add to the insights she gave to me. Listen and you will hear.

 

Now, here comes the biggest. And I realize I was guilty of same. If nothing else, please walk away from this blog with this thought. I took Martin Luther King, Jr. literally and embraced with all my heart the thought that we would NOT judge Blacks by the color of their skin, but rather, that each of us is to be measured by the content of our character. To me this meant the goal was and is a colorblind society. "When I see you, I see a good person, not a good Black person." It couldn't be more wrong! There is a huge difference between judging ones worth based on skin color and appreciating and respecting someone for what they are. Black people are proud of their blackness. They don't want us to ignore it or deny it. They want us to respect them, love them, and accept them as they are for what and who they are: people proud of their race... proud to be black. Colorblind misses the mark entirely.

And lastly, as I wrap up, there is an issue of tension and racism, a very real racial friction. I don't know how we get past that. The guy who drove into people in the parade in Wisconsin isn't who Black people are. The racist piece of shit who shot up the supermarket in Buffalo isn't who White people are. Too often people's first instinct when something like this happens is sadly, to want to know what color the perpetrator was, what color were the victims were. And in there, in that thought process, there's a reinforcement, a delineation... "I knew it! I knew it was a White/Black guy! Motherfuckers are always doing this to us!" Whataboutism is the counter, "The news didn't make as big a deal when the Black guy ran the people over." It's chicken or the egg and it will never solve a thing. It is another turn in a deadly spiral. Can we ever pull out? I don't know, but I hope so. There are race baiters of both colors and from both sides of the political aisle who make a living by keeping us at each other's throats, as is also the case with many other issues. Yes, some of them are in the GOP.

There are many Black Americans who are far more conservative than the solid voting block might lead us to believe. But if we're not open to hear their voices, if we're not willing to make room in our tent, and if we're not willing to try and understand them, different experience, culture and all, they'll never vote any other way. And if we can't silence the voices of race baiters, or at least learn to ignore them, are we even trying?

Some Amateur Analysis "Smoke and Mirrors"- 5/12/2022-2

Just some amateur analysis from your friend, Good Old Matty P. Lemme tell you what's going on.

Democrats control both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Pres. Joe Biden, a Democrat, resides in the White House. Poll numbers for the bunch of them are in the toilet. The November mid-terms, which often go badly for the party of a first term incumbent, are looking like they not only will, but that they  may be historically bad for Democrats. There are NO POPULAR ACCOMPLISHMENTS at all. None. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada. The economy is in a shambles every way from Sunday. Immigration, education, foreign policy. And don't forget the clusterfuck of a withdrawal from Afghanistan these dopes brung upon us. It's all negative and November is shaping up to be disastrous. If one of them says any different, that things are good under President Biden, that they're genuinely optimistic, I want to know the specifics. What's good? Who's happy?

It's in consideration of the preceding that led me to the following, admittedly amateur conclusion. I watched a lot of current events and issues. A few things strike me.

They are forecasting a surge of Covid-19 in the fall. Can you say "vote by mail and harvest ballots from unenthusiastic voters?" I knew you could. Covid worked before with Joe's unenthusiastic base, they're hoping it will work with a very unpopular Congress, too. Covid-surge? My ass.

Joe Biden is starting to talk about Trump. Blaming Trump for his failures. He's calling MAGA names. Since the Congress has NO ACHIEVEMENTS AT ALL to run on, he's going to use what worked in 2020. "I know you're not excited to vote for us, but we need you to vote against HIM, and also against those evil cretins who follow him!" He's trying to make 2022 about Trump, as opposed to his own lack of achievement.

And lastly, there is abortion. The leak of a SCOTUS draft ruling on Roe V. Wade was one thing, but the thing that caught my attention was the failure of an abortion bill to pass in the Senate. Thinking about that bill, it would have codified and protected abortion as a right throughout pregnancy, i.e. through the third trimester. They KNEW absolutely and 100% positively, they KNEW it would not pass. All they did was posit abortion as their issue for 2022. They have nothing else. NOTHING.

So, it looks like this for November 2022:

1. Cultivate unenthusiastic votes by mail, using Covid "protections and precautions" as justification.

2. Run against Trump, even if he ain't running. Run against Trump supporters, too. Call them racists, misogynists, the whole shooting match. Blame Trump for every Biden failure, no matter how far fetched. The base will love it. Stupid people might not check to see that they're lying, either.

3. Abortion is the issue. It's the holy grail. Don't push for anything resembling reasonable legislation regarding this issue. Silly stuff like incest, rape, and terrible genetic deformity exceptions? Reasonable people might agree. Can't have that. Restricting to early pregnancy? No. No. No. Blocking parental notification of supporting underage in getting an abortion? Yes, absolutely. The pregnant girl's parents? They're the bad guys. Resolving the abortion question through compromise and forming a reasonable coalition is a killer (pun intended). Can't lose our winning issue now, can we?

My preference for 2024, as of now, is Ron DeSantis. I will support Trump if he's the nominee. I can't imagine any reason at all I will support any Democrat. Supporting ANY Democrat gives radical whack jobs and full-term baby killers a toe-hold. No.

Democrats have made a seismic shift to the left since the Clinton Presidency.

I didn't support President Bill Clinton. But I remember times during his presidency that I thought he got things right. I agreed with him somewhere between 10 and 25% of the time. I can't think of a thing I agree with Democrats and Grandpa Joe about. They've lunged so far left on every issue, they're outta sight. And during the 2020 campaign, the left turn signal was on. Bigly. You were blinded by mean tweets. Dopes.

 

 

Trump, Trump, Trump. When all else fails, talk about Trump.

I want to hear someone's explanation as to why they think President Biden is doing a good job. One rule though. You cannot for any reason under any circumstance compare him to Presidents Reagan, Bush 41, Bush 43, or Trump. I want to hear why you think he's great, not about what he ain't. If you must make comparisons, you must compare him to Presidents Carter, Clinton, or Obama.

Worst President ever? Joe; "Hold my beer!"

Joe is the worst President of my lifetime. It's not close. If you still support him, think he's doing a good job, or want to re-elect him in 2024, I want to know what you're smoking.
